On This Appointed Task
(1 Corinthians 10:13 and 2 Corinthians 12:9)
Written at a time when the burden of caring for a dying loved one was becoming greater than my normal strength could supply. God was faithful in the 3 more years to go before the heavenly home call.
It seemed no burden when that early sign
Was but a small distraction on life’s way,
But stealthily it increased day by day
Until my eyes shed tears of burning brine.
For tears have flowed in anger and despair,
Frustration when no answers can be given,
In exhaustion when the task has driven
To strength’s limits and there’s none to spare.
But still this pressing need does not abate.
At times no wherewithal, all strength is gone;
Inadequate, can I continue on?
But God would not demand what is too great.
With limits yet unknown, just this I ask:
‘Lord, give me strength for this appointed task.’
