Exodus 8:22-23 “But on that day I will deal differently with the land of Goshen, where my people live; no swarms of flies will be there, so that you will know that I, the LORD, am in this land. I will make a distinction between my people and your people. This sign will occur tomorrow.”
It is not ‘politically correct’ today to say that God ‘takes sides’. We have been so indoctrinated to believe that all religious beliefs have equal validity because every religion is just one of many alternative ways of expressing personal ‘faith’. The accepted assumption today is that a ‘religion’ is the result of a particular group’s ‘search for God’ or ‘search for meaning’ in life.
This ‘assumption’ is not only generally accepted, it has, in our culture at least, become a mandatory fact required to be accepted by everyone, so much so that we are not permitted to reason otherwise.
This reality makes things very difficult for Christians – those of us who firmly believe the truth that: there is only one God; that he stands alone as the Creator of the Universe; that he has made mankind in his own likeness and image; that he has infallibly revealed absolute truth, firstly in his Written Word, the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments; and finally in the person of his own Incarnate Son, the Lord Jesus Christ; that Jesus came among us and gave his life as a personal sacrifice for our sin; and that eternal salvation from Hell after death can only be found in Jesus alone as Jesus himself claimed (John 14:6), and the apostle Peter confirmed (Acts 4:12).
Obviously, this basic, and essential, Christian understanding leaves no room for the way our culture defines ‘political correctness’. So Christians are on a collision course with our culture – which is exactly what Jesus himself faced, and what he said we would face if we throw in our lot with him (John 15:18).
In the light of all this, we have no choice but to stand firm, to speak out the truth, and to accept whatever consequences might inevitably come from such ‘political incorrectness’. Ironically, if we tell out these truths out of love for the lost, we will be accused of ‘hate’ speech, and punished accordingly!
When the One-True-God revealed through Moses that he intended to ‘take sides’ on behalf of his chosen covenant people, he was setting the pattern for all generations to come. This is how he has carried out his sovereign plan of salvation by grace throughout six millennia of human history, acting specifically to protect the welfare of his chosen people, his Church. Today the ‘world’ (people pitting themselves in opposition to this One-True-God) will make every attempt to ridicule, embarrass and prosecute us for believing what we believe (just as Jesus predicted). But let us not be diverted or discouraged, remembering that Jesus went on to say: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
