1 Chronicles 24:19 This was their appointed order of ministering when they entered the temple of the LORD, according to the regulations prescribed for them by their ancestor Aaron, as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded him.
This verse follows, and summarises, a long list of names of people allocated to different tasks in the service and worship in the Temple in Jerusalem. (The Books of Chronicles make for fascinating reading in the Scriptures. It is a bit like reading a Telephone Directory: a story with countless ‘characters’ but not much of a ‘plot’!) Do you serve on a ‘roster’ or two in your Church? It is a helpful way of feeling part of the Church Family, as well as of serving others and enabling you to exercise your gifts in the smooth operation of the Church. I once heard an Anglican Bishop comment (I think somewhat in jest) that the only way you know that you are a member of the Anglican Church is to be on a Roster!
It seems that the need for good order in the worship and service of God was directed and regulated by the LORD himself, and therefore firmly established by such significant figures as King David (1 Chronicles 25:1) and the apostle Paul (1 Corinthians 14, summarised in verse 40: “But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way”).
Drawing up church rosters can be challenging, and even seem a bit ‘boring’ and ‘unspiritual’, but it is so important for us all to contribute to the blessing of the whole Church by using our God-given gifts for his glory and our overall good. “Would I gladly be made nothing that Christ would be made more; would I seek the only Kingdom that far outweighs them all? I will stand before my Father where the faithful saints have stood and with joy my heart shall praise him for his glory and my good. To our God be the glory, to our God be praise: He alone, the name above all names; I will boast ever only in the Lord my God for I know his glory is my good” (CityAlight).
Let us all seek to be humble servants of the Gospel, focussing attention only on God’s glory as we quietly go about our tasks, looking out for the needs of others and pointing everything and everyone to Christ alone as Saviour.
