Psalm 75:9-10 As for me, I will declare this forever; I will sing praise to the God of Jacob, who says, “I will cut off the horns of all the wicked, but the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.”
Who is this ‘God of Jacob’ for whom Asaph has such high praise, and in whom he has such confidence that he will bring about true justice in this sin-torn world?
He is the Sovereign God of electing grace. God chose Jacob as the channel of his Plan of Salvation before he was even born (Genesis 25:23, Romans 9:10-12). He is the God of the covenant of grace. The Promise given to Abraham, to ‘bless him to be a blessing’ (Genesis 12:1-3) was transmitted through Jacob, the chosen vessel. He is the God who persisted with his covenant of grace in spite of Jacob’s multiple instances of underhand scheming and deception, his egotism and pride, and his sinful heart.
In the light of all this, I am very happy to join with Asaph and say, “As for me, I will declare this forever; I will sing praise to the God of Jacob” – because he is the God of Bruce Christian too – “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me”!
He will lift me up too, not because I am ‘righteous’ in myself, but because, by grace alone, I have been clothed with the righteousness of Christ. “When the last trumpet’s voice shall sound, oh, may I still in him be found! Clothed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before his throne. On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand.” (Edward Mote). And together, as God’s redeemed Covenant People on that Last Day, we will be ‘home’ forever with the ‘God of Jacob’ and we will see all the defiant boasts of the wicked ‘cut off’ for ever when all things are made new. “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21).
