A PROFOUND SPIRITUAL TRANSFORMATION IS UNFOLDING IN THE AMAZON

For centuries, the Catholic Church held a near-monopoly in the region. Today, evangelical and charismatic Christianity is reshaping the region’s spiritual fabric, leading to new converts and churches. Linger on the banks of the Amazon River and you’ll uncover more than the rich tapestry of life amid the natural splendor.  For many, such as Ramos, the river isn’t just a backdrop; it’s a sanctuary. “My family and I all grew up here. My grandmother, grandfather and my parents lived and died in this house. I was born in this house and I’m also going to die here,” Ramos told CBN News. As an 83-year-old resident of the Amazon River, Ramos refuses to trade his floating bamboo house for life in any Brazilian city.

Spanning more than 6 million square miles of South America, 60% of the Amazon rain forest is in northwest Brazil. The approximately 30 million Amazonians currently living here are experiencing an unprecedented renewal. “God is everything for me. God is my father and without Jesus I’m nothing,” Ramos told us. Ramos epitomizes this spiritual shift.  Growing up Catholic, he remembers when Catholicism dominated his riverside community. Not anymore. Over the many years evangelical Christians have been traversing these waters in an attempt to bring the good news of Jesus Christ to the Amazonian people, often on small canoes or medium-sized boats to hold church services and other ministry activities as they reach remote regions. Now there are an estimated 3,200 Foursquare congregations alone flourishing across the region. Meanwhile, church teams from Brazil’s major cities send volunteers here to conduct educational, humanitarian, and medical missions. This outreach often helps introduce people to the gospel message. SILENT PRAYER NOT LISTED AS OFFENCE UNDER NEW ABORTION ZONE’ LAW

The UK government has announced that “buffer zones” will come into effect outside abortion clinics across England and Wales from 31st October. However, silent prayer has not been specifically listed as an offence under the new rules. These zones will make it illegal to intentionally influence someone’s decision to seek abortion services within a 150-metre radius. The Home Office confirmed on Wednesday that anyone found guilty of violating the law could face an unlimited fine.

While silent prayer is not explicitly banned, the legislation does prohibit harassment, intimidation, and any form of influence. Religious freedom groups warn that vague legal definitions can be easily misinterpreted and abused – and that silent prayer could still be seen as a violation. Lois McLatchie Miller from Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) UK told Premier that the term “influencing” is too broad: “If I’m a friend or a mother asking someone, ‘Are you sure you want to do this?’ is that considered influence? If you’re having a consensual conversation between two friends, is that influence? And of course, if you’re simply praying—does that count?”

Although freedom of thought is protected under international and domestic law, McLatchie Miller says Christians remain vulnerable to arrest. ADF is calling for “clear, consistent, and predictable” legal definitions to ensure fair judgments. [Source: Premier Christian News]

NEW LAWS RESTRICTINE WORK OF THE GOSPEL

India’s foreign funding laws are presenting problems for Christian organizations. Most non-government organisations rely on foreign funding to operate in India, and more than 100 organizations have lost their funding licences under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act. John Pudaite from Bibles for the World says India’s Hindu nationalist government frequently uses the Act to stifle growth in the charity sector. Bibles for the World began submitting licence renewal applications back in 2021, and since then have been stuck in never-ending registration limbo.

The government has issued temporary three-month extensions for groups in the limbo camp. The current extension is only until September 30. Bibles for the World is urgently sending funds to their partners to sustain the ministry to the end of the year at least. Currently, there are over 3,000 licence applications pending renewal. Most of these are from Christian organizations and churches.

PRAYER AND ASSISTANCE FOR CHRISTIANS AFTER NIGERIA & BANGLADESH FLOODING

NIGERIA: One man explained: “We were just sleeping and suddenly the flood came from nowhere.” “All the plants are dying … there are so many chemicals in the water right now. It’s killing all the plants. While floods aren’t uncommon in this region, experts have said that this is the worst flood to hit Maiduguri in three decades. To make matters worse, many Christians affected have already been displaced by constant attacks from Islamist terror group Boko Haram. Believers are salvaging what they can from their destroyed homes, business and churches. This latest disaster has compounded their dire situation, wiping out the life they were rebuilding, leaving them extremely vulnerable once again.

BANGLADESH: “I don’t know where to go and whom I should ask for help. There’s water everywhere!” These were the words of an elderly Bangladeshi Christian villager. The old man stood waist deep in the floodwater while cradling his baby granddaughter in his arms. “I have lost everything. Please help,” he implored, as he and those around continued to wade through the murky waters.  Entire villages have been swallowed up by flash floods, caused by nearly double the usual monsoon season rains. Communities have become isolated, without access to clean water or adequate food supplies to survive.

PRAYER REQUEST OF RETURN OF PEACE AND SECURITY IN BURKIMA FASO

Missionaries and pastors are meeting regularly in Burkina Faso to discuss how best to work against the backdrop of violence. So far, they have held community health days to provide free health care, organized new Bible study groups and planted more churches. The violence stems from a series of coups in 2022 in which the military overthrew a government accused of failing to curb ongoing terrorist attacks by armed groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS. Christian Aid Mission reports that by the time of the coups, insurgency attacks had caused the deaths of at least 10,000 people and displaced more than 2 million. At least 500,000 people face catastrophic levels of food insecurity, largely caused by food blockades imposed by armed groups. Even as violent attacks fall unannounced on unsuspecting civilians, missionaries and pastors carry on with their work. They request prayer for a return of peace and security in Burkina Faso.
