Burnout in ministry is one of the most difficult challenges in serving Christ. While the issue is obviously multifaceted, Dr. Mark Jones talks about—from his own experience—the underlying problem of pride. This is a temptation for those particularly in pastoral ministry. We want the bigger church, the greater influence and the more significant legacy. But that’s an insidious manifestation of the sins of envy and selfish ambition (i.e. James 3:13-16).
What follows is both a fascinating and nuanced exploration of why those who serve Christ often struggle to remain in ministry. Dr. Jones original article, “Some Reflections on Ministerial Burnout”, in Reformation 21 can be view here.
