Ezekiel 45:10 You are to use accurate scales, an accurate ephah and an accurate bath.
Ezekiel took 9 chapters (40-48) to describe in detail the vision he was given of the ‘Temple’ and ‘City’ which were to represent the Lord’s presence among his people for whenever they returned from the Exile (see 48:35). God was to be the Architect and Builder (cf Hebrews 11:10) – it would be his design and plan, existing by his work and grace alone.
As God was very particular about the dimensions and details, leaving nothing to chance or interpretation, so the inhabitants were to be careful to live in total obedience to his revealed Word.
We live in a society that no longer puts a high value on honesty and integrity, where ‘accurate scales’ somehow don’t matter if we can work things to our own advantage and get away with it, hoping nobody notices. As citizens of the City whose name is ‘The Lord is there’ (48:35), we have a special responsibility to stand out against this trend, and to ‘provide things honest in the sight of all men’ (Romans 12:17, KJV), whether it be in our use of time at work, in the paying of fares (I never cease to be amazed at the number of people I see failing to ‘tap on/off’ on public transport!) and taxes, at the check-out, or in the selling and buying of goods. Our God takes honesty seriously – do we?
