Isaiah 54:14  In righteousness you will be established: Tyranny will be far from you; you will have nothing to fear.  Terror will be far removed; it will not come near you.

As Isaiah proclaimed this promise of the LORD to his Covenant People who were under great oppression from much stronger surrounding nations, especially Babylon at the time, he proclaimed it with confidence because he had received it from the Sovereign LORD himself; but he probably could not have imagined just how perfectly it would ultimately be fulfilled.

It is fulfilled in the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, God’s Covenant People for over 2,000 years!  And how are we ‘established in righteousness’?  By the righteousness of Christ, imputed to us by grace through faith in his finished work – his death, resurrection, and ascension to God’s Right Hand!  Nothing could be more sure or permanent than this.

The Hebrew word translated ‘established’ is a short but strong and powerful word meaning to be immovably set and firmly fixed.  So this is a comforting word for us today when we are under such tyrannical threat from a hostile world, a world that is determined to undermine and remove the influence of God’s written Word, the Bible, and of his Living Word, the Lord Jesus Christ; a world that is ‘faithfully’ fulfilling the prophecy of Psalm 2:2-6 – “The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the LORD and against his Anointed One [his ‘Christ’].  ‘Let us break their chains,’ they say, ‘and throw off their fetters.’  The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them.  Then he rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying, ‘I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill.’”

It is comforting to know that, with Jesus ruling at God’s Right Hand now, “[we] will have nothing to fear. Terror will be far removed; it will not come near [us]”.  Let us be encouraged by Isaac Watts’ rendering of Psalm 72: “Jesus shall reign where’er the sun does its successive journeys run, his kingdom stretch from shore to shore, till moons shall wax and wane no more” – that is, till he comes again in power, when his rule will be obvious to all.
