God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal and unchangeable in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness and truth.
We live in a world where fake news is a thing.
Several times over the last few years I have wondered what the truth is about a situation – be it lockdowns, vaccines, elections or wars. It is so difficult to actually know the truth.
Perhaps you have wondered what the truth is about God or Jesus or life after death.
Truth is that which aligns with reality.
Our problem as weak, limited and flawed people is that we can’t know all the facts of a situation. There are too many balls in the court to keep a track of. There are some things, like life after death, that we can’t even observe.
On top of that, our perception of things can be skewed. We see some facts and then we fill in the blanks with our own ideas or we choose to focus on some facts while ignoring others or we think we see some facts but in actual facts we have only seen half the picture.
And to top it all off, we are deceptive and wicked. We lie to others and even to ourselves about reality regularly.
God is not like us. God is truth.
God has perfect knowledge, partly because he is everywhere and has the capacity to observe all that is happening at every level. But God also has perfect knowledge because he ordains all things. He knows it all because he is the one writing the story.
God’s perception is never skewed. He always sees things with perfect vision.
And God cannot lie (Titus 1:2).
God doesn’t just know the truth as if the truth is some abstract thing outside of God that God has to research and study in order to find it. God is truth.
This is why Jesus could say in John 14:6 “I am the way, the truth and the life”. The Spirit is called “The spirit of truth” five times in the New Testament. And in Moses’ song of Deuteronomy 32 he proclaims the name of the LORD, “a God of truth”.
God is the very standard of truth. His words are true, his view of the world is the right one, his promises are true – he will keep them absolutely, his declarations of things which cannot be observed are all true, his history is true, his view of you is true.
God is a spirit, infinite, eternal and unchangeable in his truth.
