David Powlison died of cancer soon after this, his last book, was published. It is a short but worthwhile treatment of spiritual warfare. Powlison does not see the picture of the whole armour of God (Eph.6:10-20 as based on a Roman soldier, but on Christ especially as He is portrayed in Isaiah (e.g. 49:2; 52:7; 59:17). An experienced counsellor, he considered that the three main issues that he had to deal with revolved around three things: anger, fear, and escapism. He is suspicious of any emphasis on exorcism, and believes that the teaching of the Word and prayer are what people need.
For such a small book, this is saturated with Scripture references, and advice on how to use them in counselling situations. There are simple insights on every page. We can be grateful that the Lord spared Powlison long enough to finish this work.
